Camping and Hiking in Montana

Montana offers more uncrowded hiking and camping opportunities than most of us can enjoy in a lifetime. From the plains and badlands of eastern Montana to the majestic mountains and National Parks in the west, Montana offers amazing opportunites for anyone interested in the out-of-doors.  Yellowstone Park and Glacier Park are both destinations for the hiker and camper but there are many lesser known places to enjoy the wilderness.  I have been fortunate to live in Montana for most of my adult life and have spent much of that time out in the woods and on the water.  In this site I hope to share with you some of my enthusiasm for this great state.

If you want to explore hiking and camping in Montana the first thing I reccommend is that you buy a copy of the excellent book Hiking Montana by Bill Schneider. This is the classic hiking guide for Montana and in 2004 the 25th anniversary edition was released.  I can't begin to tell you what a great tool this book is. It provides an excellent overview of hiking and camping in all parts of Montana. The hikes described are very representative of what you can find in an area and I consider this book to be a "must have" for anyone interested in Montana hikes. For information about purchasing this great book please click here Hiking Montana: 25th Anniversary Edition.

Since I will assume that most visitors to this site have already purchased the book described above I will tend to focus on Montana hikes that are not covered in the book.  I will put up new hike descriptions as I have time but it may be slow as I develop the site and experiment with design. There are many hiking guides and maps for Montana, Yellowstone and Glacier check be sure to look in our Books & Maps section. We feature a number of excellent books that can really provide you with some great trip planning information.

Throughout the site I will offer personal accounts of hiking various trails in Montana, Yellowstone Park and Glacier Park. Most of these are my stories but as time goes on I will add stories from friends and readers. I have only put up a few hikes for now but will add them as I have time to generate new pages.

Hiking and Camping opportunities abound in Montana and the surrounding areas. No matter if you are a first time car camper or an expert mountaineer you will find a perfect place in the vast wilds of the area. In our Camping section you will find stories about places where I recommend you enjoy camping in the wilds, as well as some how to advice for various types of camping.

In the Equipment section you will find how to advice, equipment reviews and practical suggestions about the gear and equipment that help to make a trip special.

You can find general information about Montana, Yellowstone and Glacier as well as trip planning information in our Traveling Montana section. Montana is a huge state and filled with out-of-the-way places that can really make a vacation special. Hopefully you will find out about a few here
